New Student Blog Project

This semester, I’m trying out a new project for my writing class. I’m inviting my students to start a blog about anything they want (within reason) in an attempt to get them excited (or at least relaxed) about writing.

I’d love to get some feedback from anyone who’s tried out blogs in the classroom...

Be careful with this because it's a reflection of you and your class. If it's filled with typos, it will be amateurish. I suggest you keep a tight reign. I've never taught an upper-grade class, so I've never attempted this. There are too many mediocre blogs, and to be done right, people need to write on them regularly. I've come across a blog or two that were clearly done by students, and they were a mess.

It seems better when teachers set up a blog and post on student sites. You could have a few categories and have certain groups be in charge of contributing, with no posts allowed until they are free of errors. Then parents could peruse everything in one place, and you'd be creating an on-line community as extension of your classroom.
